How do you get to the Olympics in fencing?

Every Olympic fencer started in a local club. Here's the actual ladder — and an honest word on what it takes.

  1. Join a club with a competitive program and train seriously (multiple sessions a week + private lessons).
  2. Earn a rating at local tournaments.
  3. Regional circuits — RYC (youth) and RJCC (junior/cadet) events build national points.
  4. North American Cups (NACs) — the national tournament series where rankings are built.
  5. Junior Olympics + Summer Nationals, then the Division I National Championships (you need an A, B or C to enter).
  6. Make the Junior, then Senior National Team by accumulating national points.
  7. International Junior/Senior World Cups + Grand Prix to build a world ranking.
  8. Olympic qualification comes through world ranking and zonal qualifiers — and you must be a U.S. citizen.
Reality check: this is a 10+ year, near full-time commitment with real cost. That's not a reason not to start — it's a reason to start young, at a good club, and to fall in love with the sport first. Most fencers who reach nationals never planned to; they just kept showing up.
